Best Medicine – No Place Like Om – Review : A Mud Bath, Happy Place And A Graduation, What Could Go Wrong?

Based on the name of this episode, there is no way that I could have perceived this as being one of the most emotional episodes of the show so far. I absolutely loved this episode so much, the balance between the funny moments and the emotional moments were so perfect. It was quite nice to be surprised by the emotional moments too.
Almost every single character had an emotional moment and it was oddly nice to watch these people go through real issues. Normally we get them going through stress about not being able to go to the next town event, it actually made me more invested in everyone’s lives.
Before I get into the emotional moments of the episode, I really want to mention some of the funniest moments because there were so many. First of all seeing Martin in joggers and a t-shirt was so great to see, I think what makes it funnier is knowing the offscreen conversation Martin would have had with Mark trying to protest wearing those clothes. The death song that the choir played when the ambulance was taking off was so hilarious. I don’t know if Martin falling in the mud twice was truly meant to happen or not because it looked so realistic that Mark’s hand just slipped and he went backwards so hard, it was awesome.

All of those moments are so funny but the one moment I literally had to pause the episode for because I was laughing so much was when Martin was speaking to the leader and she said “speed disrupts peace” so slowly and before Martin had even got the full $100 offering out she quickly went “hit me”. Even thinking about it now is making me laugh.
Moving onto the more emotional parts of the episode, watching Sarah in this episode was truly heartbreaking. I know we’ve seen her kiss Eddie before, but it never really occurred to me that we haven’t seen Sarah have a steady relationship at all.
The emotions she was feeling poured through the screen, when she was on the couch and getting annoyed about his breathing, you could tell that it wasn’t really what she was annoyed about and it was her trying to adjust to another person being there with her. The small moments are what made us understand that Sarah has been alone for quite a long time, it makes all the more sense why Martin coming to town was so important and why she wanted him to stay so much.
Also why her bond with Peter Cronk in the last episode was great to watch because it was just two people who don’t really have anyone that they are super close with; offering a friendship token.
I felt so much for Louisa throughout this episode, she was so stressed out about everything not going the way that she wanted for the graduation, and the very relatable words of worrying about people saying “is that really what you want to say”. Then to have the pregnancy test be negative was a lot.
I did like that we didn’t see her go through that pain alone though, and that she had George and Elaine were there for her straight away.
Even more than that, Martin giving up going to see Eden so that he could spend time with Louisa and make sure she was okay was even better. The layers behind that final scene were so great, the fact that he had listened to where her happy place was and knew to find her there, the unspoken knowing of what she was going through, the silent calmness of them just looking out on the water together.
I could not have loved that scene more, the fact that Martin cares so much about Louisa that he would be willing to make jokes just to make her feel better shows just how much she matters to him, episode one Martin would never have done that.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved Martin and everyone else in this episode, however to me the best performance of this episode was from Josh Segarra as Mark.
I loved every single moment that he was on screen, the usual funny moments that I love showed up a lot, but my favourite moment of the episode was when he was realising things about his life. There was a sudden seriousness to everything he was feeling, acknowledging that maybe he hasn’t matured as much as he would have liked and that he’s still holding onto the past.
Him trying to help Sally take off her neck-brace and choking back some tears when he was running out was so hard to watch.

I honestly got quite emotional when he got to walk the graduation stage, the joy that he had in being able to do it and after hearing how he really feels about himself was such an icing on the cake moment. I just could not give enough praise to his performance this episode, I went on the whole ride with him.
This is such an incredible show and I am genuinely hopeful that this will go on for many season, because this cast paired with the scripts they have been handed makes for an impeccable tv show.
