Chicago Fire – Speak Of The Devil – Review : You Can Never Out Do The Doer

I have to be honest this season of Chicago Fire has been a little bit of a let down, yes there have been necessary budget cuts however there have definitely been times that there could have been better characters paired together and this was one of those episodes.
For some reason this season 90% of Severide’s major episodes have happened whilst Stella is out of town and vice versa. I’m not saying we always need to see them together but given the fact that they lost a child at the start of this season and everything that happened with Isaiah, there definitely needed to be a lot more episodes where we could have seen them lean on each other more.
I am glad that this episode did wrap up what happened with Benny and Hopkins 30 years ago. I do always love when we get to learn more information about Benny posthumously but this whole storyline and clearly Severide’s upcoming storyline feel so overdone at this point. Especially with OFI, it seems like every few seasons we have to revisit this storyline and unfortunately it gets less and less interesting each time.
I loved Lizzie’s storyline in this episode. We have rarely seen much of her family in previous seasons but we have been able to see a lot more of them this season and it’s been great. I think the complexity of their relationships with each other make it such an intriguing story to watch especially as often we are seeing them try and work through tough situations.
Lucy finally was fired in this episode and it may have only been because Hopkins was trying to cover his own back but I for one am glad she is gone. She did help Kidd with the file, however I do feel that this may not be the last time that we see her. Something has been off about her since she first started and it’s not just because of her past with Hopkins.
I’m not really too sure why we have the Mouch and Herrmann plot take place in this episode, it definitely felt like a bit of a filler storyline in the episode but I wasn’t mad about it. I really liked the way the episode ended with Mouch making it a book about the pair of them instead of just himself. I always love to see their relationship, it gives a little glimpse back to the early seasons.
Next week is the season finale and it looks like it should be a good episode to end this season, I am definitely looking forward to seeing why Pascal is back and what happens with the explosion. No doubt someone’s life will be left in the balance for the hiatus.
