Artificial intelligence has quickly moved from being a futuristic plot device to becoming part of the actual process of making television and movies. While audiences have spent decades watching fictional computers become smarter, today’s filmmakers, studios, writers, editors, and visual effects teams are increasingly experimenting with real AI tools behind the scenes.
The result is an entertainment industry trying to determine where AI can make production faster and more creative — and where its use begins to change what audiences value about movies and television in the first place.
AI Is Already Part of the Production Process
Much of the conversation surrounding artificial intelligence focuses on generative AI, but automated technology has been assisting film and television production for years.
AI-powered software can help organize footage, remove unwanted objects from scenes, improve audio, upscale older video, create visual effects, and speed up repetitive editing tasks. Productions dealing with enormous amounts of footage can also use software to identify faces, locations, dialogue, and specific shots much faster than a person could manually review everything.
These applications tend to attract less controversy because AI is functioning primarily as a tool. An editor still decides what appears on screen; the technology simply makes parts of the process easier.
Generative AI creates a much more complicated discussion.
Can AI Help Write a TV Show?
One of the biggest questions is whether artificial intelligence should participate in writing movies and television shows.
Generative AI can already produce plot ideas, character descriptions, dialogue, episode concepts, and even complete scripts. For a writer staring at a blank page, it might function almost like an extremely fast brainstorming partner.
However, producing words is not necessarily the same thing as creating a compelling story.
Great television depends heavily on character development, subtext, pacing, emotional experience, and an understanding of why audiences connect with certain moments. Those are areas where human writers remain particularly important.
There is also the question of originality. As AI-generated writing becomes more common online, tools such as an AI detector have emerged to analyze whether text may have been produced by artificial intelligence. Similar questions surrounding authenticity could eventually become increasingly relevant throughout entertainment as viewers, studios, and creators try to understand exactly how much human involvement went into a finished production.
Actors Could Be Affected Too
Writers are not the only people watching the development of AI closely.
Technology can now create increasingly realistic digital humans, modify an actor’s appearance, generate voices, and potentially recreate performances. Some applications are relatively straightforward. A production might use technology to make an actor appear younger or help adjust dialogue after filming.
But the technology also raises much larger questions.
If a studio can digitally reproduce an actor’s face or voice, who controls that likeness? Could a background performer theoretically appear in future productions without physically returning to the set? And what happens when technology becomes capable of generating convincing performances from people who never participated in the production?
These questions make consent, compensation, and ownership particularly important as the technology improves.
Visual Effects May See Some of the Biggest Changes
One area where AI seems especially likely to have a lasting impact is visual effects.
Producing effects-heavy television and movies can require enormous teams completing thousands of individual tasks. AI tools may eventually automate portions of rotoscoping, background creation, motion tracking, image cleanup, animation, and other labor-intensive processes.
That does not necessarily mean visual effects artists disappear.
Instead, their jobs may shift toward directing and refining what automated systems create. A visual effects artist could potentially generate several concepts in minutes and then spend more time improving the strongest option.
For smaller productions, this could be particularly significant. Effects that once required the budget of a major studio might eventually become accessible to independent filmmakers and smaller television productions.
Audiences May Decide Where the Line Is
Technology has always changed entertainment.
Computer-generated imagery transformed visual effects. Digital cameras changed production. Streaming dramatically altered how television is distributed and consumed.
AI may simply represent the next major technological transition.
The difference is that artificial intelligence can potentially participate in areas traditionally viewed as distinctly human: writing, acting, art, music, and storytelling itself.
That makes the audience response especially important.
Viewers may have little concern about AI being used to remove a microphone accidentally visible in a shot. They might feel very differently about discovering that a favorite character’s emotional monologue was entirely generated by software.
Studios will therefore have to determine not simply what AI can do, but what audiences are comfortable allowing it to do.
The Future Is Probably Human and AI Together
The most realistic future for Hollywood probably is not one where artificial intelligence completely replaces writers, actors, directors, editors, or artists.
Instead, AI is likely to become another tool available to them.
The productions that use it successfully may be those that allow technology to eliminate tedious work while leaving creative decisions in human hands. AI can generate possibilities extremely quickly, but filmmakers still have to decide which possibilities are meaningful.
And ultimately, that may remain the most important distinction. Television and movies are not memorable simply because they are technically impressive. They are memorable because someone created characters, stories, and moments that made an audience feel something.
Artificial intelligence may change how those stories are made.
The bigger question is whether viewers will be able to tell the difference.
