Suits LA : season 1 episode 8 starts with Ted coming to Amanda checking to see if she has thought about his proposal, which she turns down but is open to her being convinced to join. I have to admit she doesn’t seem too keen on doing the job, but it seems it may be more to do with Ted than to do with the job itself.
We move onto Erica receiving a phone call from her mum notifying that Arthur has died, she then tells a sweet childhood story of when she was stealing lemons from his back garden and when she got caught, instead of scolding her for it he helped her set up her lemonade stand. As sweet as this story is, Erica is unable to focus on the death of someone dear to her as she immediately has to focus on Adam possibly moving firms.
We then see that Leah’s cat has been put down whilst at the vets, I don’t overly agree with the way she was told by the veterinarian, there definitely could have been a more sympathetic and kind way to approach the situation, however she also is not given a moment to think about her loss as Erica unloads her feelings onto her when she advises that she won’t be able to go to the dinner with Adam.
This episode is very fast paced and showcases three different storylines, the second one being between David Bowie and Stuart, David admits to Stuart that he did not set the car alight, however he did intimidate her, however he does have credible evidence that the witness is a drug addict.
We then move onto the third storyline of this episode with the flashback to New York 2010, where Ted receives a death threat about a newspaper prank. The courtroom is just as tense when Jimmy is describing how he was ordered to make hits on people, someone taking a vacation always meant that they should be murdered, specifically blown up in the way that Pellegrini liked. It is then revealed by Jimmy that Billy Esposito had a hit ordered on him due to him testifying against Pellegrini, Jimmy advises that all hits must take place within a two-day period and 5 of the 15 hits that had been ordered were in person. It is quickly drawn out of him during questioning that he was not in the room with Pellegrini when the hits were ordered as he was out of town for at least a week before the murders happened.
We then come back to the present day where Erica has been called into speak to Martin at HR, who she quickly turns on and rips into him for interjecting into a situation he was neither involved in or made aware of, only that he overheard the conversation and did not feel it was appropriate, which he was correct about.
A flashback to New York 2010 is shown again, this time Ted is arguing with Jimmy about lying on the stand due to wanting a deal. This leads to Ted’s boss scolding him and stating that Ted is going to be the disgraced son of a convict and he was the fool to give him a chance if he didn’t solve it. Ted knows that he needs financial files to win the case which he speaks to Billie’s daughter about to try and obtain them. He knew that she would refuse to show them to him but that she would also go straight to them, so he had Kevin follow her to get them.
Kevin meets Ted at his apartment and talk about how the one person that could help them is Harvey Specter, Ted is brought out of his trace into the past by Amanda talking, he slightly opens up to Amanda and how New York went bad and how he had always wanted to be a prosecutor, he asks Amanda to reconsider which she offers that she may do so.
We then head back to our second storyline with Stuart approaching Rick’s client to request drug proof which he obtains, albeit causing Rick to loose his relationship with his client, not that he seems bothered by this.
Erica then is met by Roslyn in her office, calling her out on her behaviour towards Martin and needing her to speak to Martin about her actions. Erica obliges and goes to see Martin, apologising for her behaviour, his response being incredibly funny calling her an angry preying mantis. Martin offers Erica the information that Leah had her cat put down which is why she was unable to make it to her meeting.
We have a small scene of Amanda visiting Stuart to ask him questions about Ted and whether he is an Ethical man or not, to which she is met with the response that Stuart respects Ted, but he does not like that Stuart wanted to represent everyone.
Once again, the storyline switches to New York 2010, with Harvey and Ted meeting in a bar, however the meeting does not go to plan for Ted as Harvey refuses to give up clients financial records. Personally one of my favourite quotes from this episode happens in this episode when Harvey states “Thank God I’m not you” in response to Ted saying he would do the same if he was in his position. This scene to me really showed how well Gabriel Macht slips straight back into being Harvey, it was such a small scene, but it exudes Harvey Specter personality.
We then see Stuart in New York which shocks not only the audience but also Ted, he is trying to get Jimmy a deal and encourages Ted to give him a second change.
We once again return to the present day where Stuart has visited Isaac at the DA’s office to tell him to drop the entire David Bowie suit, however he is met by an icy reception when Isaac tells him that another witness with no issues or dirty laundry is willing to testify. Stuart orders David to his office, he demands that he finds someone else to represent him as there is another witness who recorded their conversation when Bowie threatened him. In order to keep Stuart as his attorney, Bowie tells him that he threatened 40-50 people and it was impossible to know who it was, he also admits to lighting the fire in the car, but he never wanted to kill her, just to warn her. Stuart agrees to keep him on as a client, which I definitely did not think was a smart idea whilst watching, and that theory gets proven towards the end of the episode.
Again we turn to our Erica storyline where we see her approach Leah about the death of her cat, it starts out sympathetic however she once again unloads on Leah for not pushing down her feelings just like Erica had when someone she cared about died. We follow Erica to her mother’s house where she cries over not getting to say goodbye to Arthur because she thought she had more time.
For the final time in this episode we flashback to New York 2010, where Jimmy has taken the stand once again, explaining how Billie was his best friend and how he needed to be told by Pellegrini directly if he was going to kill him and not through Vinnie Santoro, Ted then submits photo evidence of Jimmy and Pellegrini outside the latter’s office. Whilst Ted and Kevin are discussing the case, Harvey shows up with a box of financial records, and a small victory moment for all the OG Suits fans a mention of Daniel Hardman and Harvey getting his own back on him.
Back to the present day and Amanda has confirmed that she will join Ted, but only if she can have the answers to two questions, the first being if she can defend anyone even if that person is guilty which Ted advises that she can. The second question being more intimate on what they are doing and where they are going relationship wise, Amanda gives Ted time to think about it, however he chooses this time to leave.
The final scene of this episode sets up episode 9 perfectly by having Harvey explain that they will be taking a trip to New York to ensure that they do the correct thing this time.
