The streets of Harlem are heating up once again as Godfather of Harlem returns for its highly anticipated fourth season on MGM+. With Forest Whitaker reprising his role as the formidable Bumpy Johnson, the show continues its gripping blend of historical drama and crime thriller — and this season, it’s pulling no punches.
Season 4 picks up with tensions at an all-time high. The criminal underworld is shifting, political battles are intensifying, and Harlem’s soul is once again caught in the crossfire. From backroom deals to street-level warfare, the show dives deeper into the corrupt and complex dance between power, loyalty, and survival.
Ahead of the premiere, I had the absolute pleasure of catching up with some of the key players both in front of and behind the camera, and let me tell you — they’re just as fired up about this season as the fans are.
Rome Flynn Joins the Cast
Working alongside Forest Whitaker was a highlight for him — “what drew me to this role is working with Forest Whitaker and the other amazing actors on this show. The storyline, the rich history and track record of Chris Brancato’s shows doing really well and it’s an opportunity to stretch myself creatively, in ways that I haven’t before.”
Flynn described how the new season dives even deeper into the show’s powerful themes of crime, identity, and politics. Rome’s passion and dedication to his craft makes him a standout addition to the series.

Chris Brancato: The Vision Behind the Legacy
Brancato described a different era for the show, in terms of dealing with life after Malcolm’s death. “What excites me the most is we had to make a kind of re-boot after Malcolm’s death at the end of last season and so we are introducing the character, Frank Lucas, and the Black Panther party which sprung up in New York City after Malcolm’s death. In some ways, it’s a little bit of a reboot of the show and I think fans are going to find it very interesting to see how we deal with the fact that Malcolm is no longer with us.”
Chris teased that fans can expect an emotionally rich and socially relevant season, as the story continues to explore the blurred lines between revolutionaries and criminals, leaders and outlaws.

Lucy Fry & Michael Raymond James: Loyalty Has a Price
Lucy, who portrays the ever-complicated Stella Gigante, opened up about her character’s continued evolution. Stella is at a crossroads this season — torn between her past, her family, and a new sense of self. Michael Raymond James, whose character often operates in the morally grey areas of the story, emphasized the stakes this season. Loyalty? It comes at a price. And this season, they’re cashing in.
The duo’s insight and passion for their roles, promises a captivating and intense season ahead.
